Great Britains Marissa King claimed the bronze medal in vault, the only non-U.S. individual event medal.

On the first day of competition, the USA won the team title, 238.50 points to Britains 218.10.  The United States also swept the all-around medals, with Johnson winning the title.  Worley was second, followed by Peszek.  In the all-around, the USA finished in the top seven spots.

Johnson wins all-around, USA claims team title in USA vs. Great Britain

LISBURN, N. Ireland, March 17, 2007 2007 Tyson American Cup champion Shawn Johnson of West Des Moines, Iowa, won the all-around and the USA earned the team title in the USA vs. Great Britain competition held today in Lisburn, N. Ireland. Johnsons score of 60.150 led a U.S. sweep of the top seven spots in the all-around with Shayla Worley of Orlando, Fla., and Samantha Peszek of McCordsville, Ind., finishing second and third, respectively.

In the team competition, the USA garnered a total of 238.50 points to Britains 218.10. The events format had six women competing for the team, but only five scores counted for each apparatus.  The gymnasts whose scores counted toward the team score were Bianca Flohr of Creston, Ohio, Ivana Hong of Blue Springs, Mo. Natasha Kelley of Katy, Texas, Johnson, Peszek and Worley.  For the all-around, Kelley was fourth, followed by Hong, Bridget Sloan of Pittsboro, Ind., and Flohr in fifth through seventh.

Four U.S. and four British gymnasts advanced to the individual event finals on Sunday, March 18.  The USA sent a team of eight gymnasts to the event, six of whose scores counted in the team competition, but all eight competed for advancement in the individual event finals.

Heres the event breakdown for the USA for the event finals:  vault Hong, Johnson, Peszek and Worley; uneven bars Johnson, Kelley, Peszek and Worley; balance beam Hong, Johnson, Kelley and Peszek; and floor exercise Johnson, Hilary Mauro of West Chester, Ohio, Sloan, and Worley.  Flohr did not advance to event finals because of the limitation of four U.S. gymnasts.

To win the all-around title, Johnson scored a 14.550 on vault and a 15.100 on uneven bars.  On balance beam, she and Hong tied for first with a 15.500.  Johnson posted a 15.000 on floor routine.

Worleys total score of 59.650 included a 14.600 on vault, a 15.450 on uneven bars, a 15.000 on beam and a 14.600 on floor. With a total of 58.650, Peszek scored a 14.500 on vault, a 14.600 on uneven bars, a 15.300 on balance beam and a 14.250 on floor.

On floor, Sloan earned a 14.800 and Mauro posted a 14.650, to put them in the top four U.S. scores for the event, behind Johnson and Worley.  Mauro did not compete on all four apparatus.

The USA vs. Great Britain competition continues tomorrow with the individual event finals. The competition will be shown via a live Web cast, beginning at approximately 8:30 a.m. ET. To sign up for the Web cast, visit www.bgtv.biz/ for subscription information.

March 2, 2007 - DeVeau's own Samantha Peszek is at the Tyson American Cup in Jacksonville, FL.  There are some great photos from media day and training on the USA Gymnastics homepage.  Plus there is training video from practice yesterday.  Follow Sam's progress at the Tyson American Cup on the USAG website.

For immediate release - February 6, 2007 - Peszek named for 2007 Tyson American Cup

2006 U.S. junior vault silver-medalist Samantha Peszek of DeVeaus School of Gymnastics in Fishers, Ind., will join 2006 world team silver-medalist Ashley Priess of Hamilton, Ohio, 2006 U.S. junior all-around champion Shawn Johnson of West Des Moines, Iowa, and join Jana Bieger of Coconut Creek, Fla., on the U.S. Womens Team that will compete in the 2007 Tyson American Cup at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla. Bieger, the world all-around silver medalist at the 2006 World Championships, was named to the team in late 2006.

"This is an incredibly talented womens team," said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. "Ashley did an excellent job at the 2006 World Championships, and Shawn and Sam have both enjoyed tremendous success as juniors, winning both here and abroad, and this will be their first international competition as seniors. The combination of Jana, Ashley, Shawn and Sam gives the USA a strong contingent against a quality field."

The Tyson American Cup held on March 3 at 11:30 a.m. features eight men and eight women, including two men and two women from the USA, in the all-around finals.

Gymnast Peszek can earn spot in nationally televised finals

Samantha Peszek
's pals at Cathedral High School and DeVeau's School of Gymnastics don't often see her compete. Her meets are all over the country. Finally, she might be seen on the television screen.  Peszek, 15, McCordsville, is one of four women selected to represent the United States in the Tyson American Cup, set for March 3 at Jacksonville, Fla.

NBC will televise the event live at 1 p.m., featuring eight men and eight women in the all-around. Two Americans will be allowed in the finals, so Peszek would have to beat two teammates to be on TV.  Selections were made on the basis of a camp at the national training center in Texas. The appointment of Peszek, a Cathedral freshman, underscores her candidacy to make the U.S. team for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.  Other women chosen were Jana Bieger, 17, Coconut Creek, Fla.; Ashley Priess, 16, Hamilton, Ohio; and Shawn Johnson, 15, West Des Moines, Iowa.

This will be the first senior competition for Johnson and Peszek, who were first and third, respectively, in last year's junior nationals.  The most decorated of the four gymnasts is Bieger, who earned three silver medals at the 2006 World Championships. She and Priess were on the U.S. team that won a silver medal at worlds.  Some of the sport's biggest names are former American Cup gold medalists, including Carly Patterson, Kerri Strug, Shannon Miller, Kim Zmeskal, Mary Lou Retton and Nadia Comaneci.  Nastia Liukin, 17, featured in Newsweek magazine's "Who's Next in 2007," won the American Cup last year. She is recovering from an injury and thus was not selected to this year's U.S. team.

Congratulations Samantha Peszek for being named to the U.S. Women's Team to compete at the 2007 Tyson American Cup!!!  Click

One of the highlights of each J.O. season is the naming of the Region 5 All Star Team. Those Level 10 and elite gymnasts from Region 5 (Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, and Kentucky) with the highest all-around average score for the season using a set formula, earn positions on the All-Star Team. Each year the team travels to a new destination for a competition, which allows for a great competitive experience for all those involved.

Congratulations to DeVeaus own Shelby Salmon, 15, for making the 2006 Region 5 All-Star Team. Shelby, along with Hannah Toussant of Ohio, are the two elite gymnasts from Region 5 who were selected for positions on the All-Star Team. The 10-member team will travel October 10-16 to Munich and Augsburg, Germany, to compete in a dual competition with Germany.
