Girls Levels 9 and 10 Teams Place 2nd
at State and 21 Gymnasts Qualify for Regionals
The Level 9 and 10 girls teams flipped, twisted, danced, and leaped their way to winning team trophies at the Hard Rock Invitational in Phoenix, Arizona. The Level 10s placed 2nd in the Open Division that included Level 10 and Elite gymnasts. The Level 9s placed 3rd. The Level 10s 2nd place team finish was highlighted by Elizabeth McNabbs 1st place all-around finish and 1st place finish on vault in the 15 and under age group. Lizzie was awarded a Hard Rock Caf leather jacket for placing 1st all-around. She also finished 2nd on floor, 9th on bars and 11th on beam. Other Level 10 medal winners were: Nicole Johnson (4th AA, 3rd floor, 5th vault, bars, 7th beam), Krissi Woodward (9th AA, vault, bars, floor, 10th beam), Hillary Wright (11th AA, 9th beam, 10th floor), Lauren Caldemeyer (4th floor), Kaelie Baer (4th vault), Camille Hayes (9th vault), Jessica Staton (10th- vault), and Alicia Roche (12th floor). The Level 9 medal winners were: Hannah Guzzi (1st bars, 5th- AA, 7th beam), Karissa Carpenter (1st vault, 11th AA), Mikaila Buening (2nd beam), Kelsey Dillon (7th vault), Kristen Fischer (7th beam), Julie Strauch (10th bars), and Kelly Baldwin (12th vault). Although they did not medal, Nicole Krauter and Jennie Strauch performed good floor routines, with Nicole receiving her highest floor score of the season and Jennie nailing all her tumbling passes. Three gymnasts gave courageous performances despite fighting injury and illness: Taryn DeVeau (recovering from car accident), Sarah Grantham (strep throat), and Allie Myrvold (stomach virus). After the competition the gymnasts, coaches, and parents experienced a bit of the wild, wild, west at Rawhide, a popular tourist attraction. Some of them showed true cowboy spirit by dining on fried rattlesnake. The highlight of the evening was coaches Don Gibson and Tom Strange line-dancing with the gymnasts! After dinner and dancing, the group stepped out of the restaurant and right into a street gun-fight. Mikaila was scared out of her wits, but her teammates came to her rescue and explained that the gun-fight was only a re-enactment. Sarah and Lauren were taken hostage during the gun-fight, but were quickly released. The sight of a large group of strong, athletic gymnasts surrounding them must have spooked the gun-fighters! After the gun-fight, Nicole J. and Kaelie were arrested. The charges against them wont be revealed here, but they were released in time to watch Camille (aka Camel), riding a camel. The Level 9s and 10s made it safely out of the wild, wild west and back to the Midwest where they are training hard and looking forward to more fun and success at their next competition in Florida.
