Congratulations to all of the boys who
participated in the Region V Gymnastics Championships on the weekend of
April 2-3, 2005!!! All of the boys who participated, two were
injured and could not participate, tried their hardest and all had great
meets! Out of the nine Level 9/10 gymnasts that could qualify to
go to Nationals, seven of them will be participating at the JO Nationals
in Houston, TX the first week of May! Drew Langhals, Kyle Mandla,
Patrick Schenkel, Eric Maas, Nate Goodwin, Richie Peterson and
Blaize Monks will be representing DeVeau's that first week in May.
The other two, Kyle Wetzel and Zach Rupe, only missed
going to Texas by 1.1 and 1.2 points respectively. The Level 10
age 16-18 year old team placed 3rd at Regionals! We are very proud
of ALL of the Level 9/10 boys for their hard work a great showing this
season! Good Luck to the National Qualifiers!

Boys for Qualifying to go to Regionals!!!
Level 9/10 Boys Attend Last Meet Before
State...The last regular meet of the 2004 2005, at the Indy
Classic, season took place on Saturday, March 5, 2005. This was one of
those meets where the Level 10s were competing without their Level 9
teammate, Blaize Monks. The Level 10s did compete with the Level
7s. It was fun to watch the future big guy gymnasts compete. If only
we could steal their scores! Richie Peterson took 6th place on
Parallel Bars with a score of 7.30 and Nate Goodwin captured 4th
on Pommel Horse with score of 8.0 (season high). Drew Langhals
had a productive meet with a scores of 8.40 (season high) on Pommel
Horse (2nd), 8.7 (season high) on Vault (3rd), 8.4 (season high) on
Parallel Bars (2nd) and a 47.9 (season high) for All-Around (4th).
Kyle Mandla had a great High Bar routine, which scored 8.90 (3rd and
season high) and an All-Around score of 47.05 for 5th place. Eric
Maas finished 2nd on Vault (8.90 and season high) and third on
Parallel Bars (8.40 and season high). Patrick Schenkel
finished 4th on Vault (8.65 and season
high). The Level 10 team, Nathan Goodwin, Zach Rupe, Richie Peterson,
Drew Langhals, Patrick Schenkel, Kyle Wetzel, Eric Maas and Kyle Mandla,
took home the 2nd place trophy. Monks competing as a Level 9 also
had a nice meet by finishing 1st on Floor (8.80) and High Bar (8.80 and
season high) and 4th in the All-Around.
Cereal City Classic Proves To Be
G-R-E-A-T... On Friday, February 18th the boys traveled to
Battle Creek, Michigan to try their luck in the Cereal City Meet. This
was one of the few meets that saw all the boys competing together; Level
9s and 10s. Several boys showed that they were working hard at improving
their scores as the season progresses by turning in their season best
scores. For instance, Blaize Monks had a season high score on
Floor with a 9.10 (5th), Pommel Horse with an 8.00, High Bar with an
8.50 and an All-Around score of 49.90. As you can see he just missed the
elusive 50 mark by .10! Drew Langhals also had a great day with a
season high score of 8.90 on Floor that was good enough for 1st place.
Langhals also tied his season high Vault score with an 8.60, also
good enough for 1st place and he scored an 8.00 on Parallel Bars which
place him 3rd on that event. Kyle Mandla was on fire with
season high scores on Floor at 8.60 (4th), Pommel Horse at 7.30 (4th),
Rings at 8.50 (2nd), Parallel Bars at 8.30 (1st) and an All-Around score
of 49.10 (1st). By finishing first in his age category Kyles
scores were good enough to be invited to the finals on the next day,
Saturday evening. Eric Maas also had a very good meet with season
high scores on Floor at 8.55 (5th), Rings at 8.20 (5th), High Bar at
7.60 (4th) and an All-Around score of 46.55 (5th). Again, by scoring in
the top six for his age bracket, Eric was invited to return the
next day to compete in the finals. Patrick Schenkel must have
eaten his Frosted Flakes that morning because he scored season high
marks on Floor with a 7.90, Rings with a 7.40, High Bar with a 5.60 and
an All Around score of 42.70! Nate Goodwin saw an opportunity to
score season high scores on the Pommel Horse at 7.70, Parallel Bars at
7.40 and High Bars at 7.00. This group of Level 10s with the help of
their teammate Zach Rupe took the 2nd place team trophy. (Richie
Peterson and Kyle Wetzel were not able to compete due to injuries.) In
the finals on Saturday evening Eric Maas walked away with sixth
place and Kyle Mandla finished second!
Viva Las Vegas... Early in
February (2/4 through 2/6) the team took their major road trip out to
the Blackjack Invitational in Las Vegas, NV. Most things that happen in
Las Vegas stay in Vegas but heres some insight into the scoring for
several boys. They did well against some heavy-duty competition.
Blaize Monks competed on Friday morning and got things started with
an 8.10 on Rings which was good enough for 10th place. On Saturday
afternoon Kyle Wetzel provided the team with a scare when he had
an equipment malfunction while competing on the Rings. No body parts
were bared but there was a loud snap when his grip gave way.
Sustaining only a slight shoulder injury he was able to complete the
meet. You gotta be tough to compete. Kyle Mandla turned in a
beautiful High Bar routine that caused the judges to discuss his score
for several minutes. In the end they gave him a score of 8.45, which was
a season best for Kyle and also good enough for 2nd place.
Drew Langhals fished 10th on Floor with a score of 8.80. His
All-Around was good enough for 20th at 45.95. Eric Maas had a
consistent meet and turned in a season high All-Around score of 45.425.
This group of Level 10s scored well enough to take 2nd place as a team!
On Sunday afternoon (Super Bowl Sunday) Nate Goodwin had a Floor
routine that provided him with a season high score of 8.45. Las Vegas
attracts boys from all over the country and is a top notch meet. While
not placing at this meet Richie Peterson and Zach Rupe
held their own and turned in consistent high quality routines.
Snow
Doesn't Slow Level 9/10 Boys... January 29, 2005 proved to be
a snowy Saturday on the way to the Queen City Meet in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Zach Rupe had his best meet of the season on several events
scoring a 7.90 on Vault (6th), 7.90 on Parallel Bars (3rd)
and 6.7 on High Bar (5th). Nathan Goodwin scored a
7.80 on Pommels for 1st place, a 7.00 on Parallel Bars for 2nd
place and 4th for an All Around score of 42.70. Blaize
Monks had a good meet and scored an 8.30 on Parallel Bars (2nd),
an 8.10 on Vault (3rd) with an All Around score of 48.20 (3rd).
Richie Peterson had a very nice Vault that scored 8.00 (4th).
Drew Langhals scored well against some strong contenders. He
finished 5th on Pommel Horse (8.20), 7th on Vault
(8.60), 6th on Parallel Bars (8.10) to achieve an All Around
score of 47.20 (9th). In addition, the Level 10 team
was able to secure a 3rd place team trophy.
Level 9/10 Guys Excel At
Home Meet...
It was an
at home meet on January 21, 2005. The boys competed in the Circle of
Stars meet at the Convention center in downtown Indianapolis. Blaize
Monks was on his game that evening with great scores across the
board resulting in a 3rd place All-Around finish. Monks
posted a score of 9.05 on Floor and 8.30 on Rings, finishing 3rd
and 4th respectively. The Level 10s also looked good.
Nathan Goodwin finished 2nd on Floor with an 8.30 and 4th
place in his age group with an All-Around score of 44.10. This was
Richie Petersons first meet for the season but showed he was a
contender by finishing 1st on Rings with an 8.3 and 4th
All-Around in his age group (44.70). Drew Langhals and Eric Maas
sat out three events due to injuries. However, Langhals had a
strong showing on Pommels and P-Bars finishing 4th on both
events. Zach Rupe finished 5th (tied for 4th) on both
Rings and Vault for a season high All-Around score of 42.70. Kyle
Mandla finished with a 2nd place on High Bar (score of
8.50) and 3rd in All-Around in his age category (16+).
Patrick Schenkel posted a score of 8.60 on Vault for a 2nd
place finish and Kyle Wetzel had scores of 8.20 on Rings and 8.50
on Vault both good for 4th place.
Tough Competition In Chicago....On January 6th and 7th the boys
traveled to Chicago to compete in the Windy City Invitational. As always
the competition was tough. This meet draws some of the very best
gymnasts from Region V. For three boys, Nate Goodwin, Drew Langhals
and Eric Maas, this was their first meet of the season. Blaize
Monks, Level 9, was the only boy from the team to compete on Friday
night. He turned in a solid performance posting an 8.2 on Vault and an
8.5 on parallel bars, good enough for 12th place in the All-Around. The
Level 10 boys competed on Saturday afternoon. Patrick Schenkel, Kyle
Wetzel and Zach Rupe all improved their scores on parallel
bars from the Kentucky meet. Drew Langhals finished 10th on Floor
and Vault in the age 16+ group. Nate Goodwin took 5th on Pommel
Horse in his age group. As a group the boys showed that they had been
working hard and faired well in this early, competitive meet.

Level 9 & 10 Men at KGA Winterfest
From L to R - Zach Rupe, Kyle Wetzel, Kyle Mandla, Patrick Schenkel and
Blaize Monksuhy
Let the competition season begin...
On the December 5th, 2004 our Level 9 & 10 male gymnasts
traveled down to Kentucky to participate in their first meet of the
season. Due to several different injuries, only half of them were
able to participate. Blaize Monks, the only Level 9 boy in
the meet, did well for a first meet as a Level 9. Zach Rupe,
one of two Level 10 age 14-15 year olds, faired well too. He
received 1st place on the vault, floor (where he actually tied but
received 1st place) and in the all-around competition. Kyle
Mandla had several nice routines and ended up finishing 1st on all
of the events except pommel (which he scratched) and in the all around
competition. Patrick Schenkel celebrated earning the 1st
place all around as well as his 1st on pommel and 2nd on rings and
vault. Kyle Wetzel received a 2nd on parallel bars and 3rd
on pommel, rings and vault. The DeVeau's Level 10 boys' combined
scores earned them the 1st place team trophy too!
Their next meet is in Chicago at the Windy City Invite.
